Flat bottom

Flat bottom helps Gondola to travel smoothly so as to have well balance for passengers to ride safely. Besides, the advantage of flat bottom can carry more passengers on the boat than general boat with elliptical bottom because of the widths in Gondola are wider than any other elliptical boats in Venice.

 

Black hull

There are two statements that Gondola is painted into black. First of all, Gondola is painted into black because of the paint waterproofs the hull of the boat. Secondly, Gondola is said to paint for commemorating fifty thousand victims in black plague. In a nut shell, most of the Gondolas in Venice are black except a few of Gondolas are painted in gold livery. Black is the only color representing the tradition of Gondola without specific icon of the color.
